What is consciousness? I remember the first time I heard that word and listened to someone speak about consciousness around 2007, I thought the person was crazy and sounded foolish. I remember the speaker saying consciousness was the newest and biggest thing in science and was the only thing worth studying. Everything was going to change because of consciousness. I remember cringing because I was embarrassed for that guy because how weird and out of touch he sounded. In 2007 the word consciousness meant little to me. Now in 2025 a quick google search results in this definition. Consciousness is the state of being aware of one's surroundings, thoughts, and feelings, including the subjective experience of being alive. It is a complex phenomenon that includes sensations, perceptions, ideas, emotions, and the ability to think and remember.

A person’s consciousness is the result of their mind’s beliefs, perceptions, attitudes, thoughts, feelings about life, and their ability to think, remember, and reason. Many of a person’s attributes are determined by the DNA inherited from their parents and what they were taught or programmed to perceive, believe, think, and feel by the people in the environment where they were raised. Most people believe that once you are grown up, you are who you are and cannot change. I want you to know this is not true. A person is only limited by their own belief, that they are limited. In 2018, I was miserable and depressed and was seeking a way out of my pain. I thought I was stuck and hopeless and overwhelmed by inner despair. I was praying for something that would help me change because I hated who I was inside.

In January 2019 and I had Hypnotherapy to help me with my depression and anger. During those sessions I was guided into my own subconscious mind to uncover and heal the source of my depression and anger. That experience awakened me to the power of my own mind and inspired me to want to know more about how my mind works. This led me to learn how to meditate and become aware of my own consciousness. I found that my consciousness was not fixed or pre-determined but rather a result of my conditioned programming and life experiences. I studied and learned how to take control and focus my mind to make changes in my conscious and subconscious mind to change how I thought, perceived, and felt.

In the years since I have learned that the speaker in 2007 was indeed correct. Consciousness is the most important thing to understand because it controls how we experience life. Human beings are non-physical consciousness or pure awareness or spirit, living in a physical body. The body is the temple for our consciousness or spirit. We are literally the definition of a hybrid being, part physical and part spiritual. It is a paradox. The physical body appears to die but the spirit or consciousness is eternal. Yet, most people go through life ignoring the spiritual and overly focused on the physical. Just like a person can work and improve the physical health of their body, the same person can also work on and improve their level of consciousness. I am an example of how a person can work to raise their level of consciousness and experience life at a higher level of existence.

As I put the time in to become familiar with my consciousness, I gradually shifted my awareness from surviving to thriving, from focusing on the fearful to focusing on being courageous. From believing I was unsafe, to believing I could create a better life for myself. From believing I was unworthy, to knowing I am worthy. I did the necessary work of healing my inner wounds and purifying my mind. Over the years, my consciousness expanded and my heart opened and began to communicate with me, and I found my heart has a mind or intelligence or consciousness of its own separate from my brain. The brain thinks but the heart knows. As I learned to trust and rest in the awareness of my heart and synchronize my heart with my brain, my awareness opened even more. This is called heart brain coherence.

On my journey I have evolved my consciousness to be more positive, loving, hopeful, kind, and peaceful while at the same time being less judgmental, angry, and conceited. The result is I am a much better version of me in all ways. I am now by default happy and free on the inside. My relationships with family and friends have been transformed and are more authentic than they were before. My values have changed from being self-centered to being of service to something greater than me. As I have raised my level of consciousness, I found that there is much more to life than what the physical world would have us believe. That life is full of beauty and magic and that we are powerful creators whether we know it or not. Raising your level of consciousness gives you a way to improve your life just like I did.

Consciousness is like the rest of nature, it is evolving. Most of humanity has been stuck in the level of consciousness of surviving. Just trying to make it through the days, as I was back in 2018. The truth is you can choose to be different and experience a different life if you are willing to evolve your consciousness. The first step is the hardest, begin by seeking help from someone who already knows the way of inner healing, peace, and hope. Happiness and joy are not myths and even you are worthy and deserving to experience an abundance of both in your life.
